Burns last week had the pleasure of hosting a conversation with the country’s leading adopters of hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles (FECVs).

The kick-off to our 2023 Burns Webinar Series featured a discussion on challenges and opportunities that accompany transit agencies’ transition to hydrogen.

Some key takeaways:

• FCEVs are proving to be reliable zero-emission solutions. But hydrogen storage and distribution infrastructure can present major challenges.
• Early FCEV adopters are achieving successful fleet rollouts through internal stakeholder buy in. But high costs, and the installation of hydrogen storage and distribution infrastructure can present major challenges.
• The transition will look different for every transit agency. Those with existing alternative fuel infrastructure may be well positioned to source hydrogen. While for some, on-site generation may be the way to go.
• Agencies and design teams will need to involve the local fire chief — early and often. Local fire and code officials are some of the most influential stakeholders in facility design decisions.
