Burns is leading facility designs to accommodate replacement of a traction power converter station critical for powering Amtrak’s electrified Northeast Corridor.
Growing power demands along the Northeast Corridor require upgrades to traction power infrastructure at New York City’s Sunnyside Yard, one of the busiest passenger rail facilities in North America.
The design-build project involves replacing one of six Static Frequency Converters (SFCs) located across the Northeast Corridor. Adding to the project’s challenges, the design approach must ensure the upgrade has no impact on revenue service — nearly 800 trains run every day through the 180-acre railyard.
Supporting Railroad Construction Company (RCC) as the engineer of record, Burns will oversee design of:
Burns will collaborate with RCC, system manufacturer Siemens, and Amtrak throughout installation of the state-of-the-art SFCs. The project is scheduled to complete the design phase in 2024 and finalize construction by 2029.
