Burns Guides San Mateo’s Zero-Emission Bus Garage Transformation

March 21, 2025

Burns is supporting construction of San Mateo County Transit District’s battery electric bus (BEB) charging infrastructure.

The District’s SamTrans bus service operates a fleet of 312 buses with 70 routes across the San Fracisco Bay Area. To comply with California’s Innovative Clean Transit regulation, SamTrans is transitioning to a 100-percent zero-emission bus fleet by 2040.

Burns will serve as a consultant to Clark Construction, the construction manager general contractor, throughout installation of 37 BEB charging bays at the South Base Maintenance Facility in San Carlos, California. As the Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) expert, Burns will coordinate charging infrastructure delivery and installation.

Clark will install a pantograph charging system within the South Base’s restructured parking areas. During the project’s second phase, SamTrans intends to construct an additional 110 BEB charging bays. Construction is scheduled to complete by 2032.
