Burns Engineering Publishes Battery Energy Storage Analysis and Design Considerations

March 12, 2025

Burns Engineering has produced one of the first market analyses and design guidelines for higher-education battery energy storage systems (BESS). Sharing lessons learned from recent projects, Burns provides an overview of the financial and operational benefits of campus energy storage installations. The guide covers currently available product types and introduces factors influencing the design, sizing and configuration of campus BESS installations.

Burns partners with higher education and clean energy clients to design BESS installations that align with institutional sustainability commitments, enhance campus energy management systems, and reduce facility operating expenses.

Although higher-education campuses account for a small share of BESS capacity, forecasters anticipate a 3x growth in BESS capacity across the country’s institutional campuses over the next five years.
