The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) is incorporating permanent license plate readers into the region’s transportation infrastructure.
The current phase of a $10-million program adds vehicle tracking technology to Staten Island’s Bayonne Bridge, Goethals Bridge, and Outerbridge Crossing. PANYNJ and regional law enforcement anticipate the high-resolution cameras will help resolve incidents of stolen vehicles, locate vehicles associated with missing persons, and clamp down on toll evasion.
Burns led infrastructure design for the ALPR installations. Engineering tasks included electrical, technology and structural design services. Burns also worked closely with a traffic consultant, developing step-by-step installation sequences to minimize traffic disruption.
