Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) is undertaking an equipment overhaul for the commuter railway locomotives serving the Greater Boston region.

MBTA’s HSP-46 locomotives are the most modern in the commuter rail fleet. MBTA is partnering with STV to maintain equipment reliability and to update obsolete systems.

Burns will support STV throughout the 10-year contract, collaborating with MBTA and third-party operator Keolis to update the locomotives’ onboard cab signal and communications systems. Tasks include:

  • Developing specifications to replace onboard electronics, including Positive Train Control (PTC) systems, with current technologies
  • Designing state of good repair upgrades for onboard communications
  • Overseeing systems decommissioning and installation
  • Supporting MBTA throughout the testing and commissioning stages
