Amtrak Begins Construction on Zoo-to-Paoli Electrification Transmission Line Program

December 4, 2024

Amtrak recently kicked off construction on a multi-year electrification transmission line program, upgrading critical distribution systems along Amtrak’s Keystone Line.

The first phase consists of upgrading the Bryn Mawr Substation from a switching station to a modern step-down substation. The second and third phases will supply 138kV power to Bryn Mawr Substation, installing new portal structures, overhead catenary, and ancillary systems.

The electrical distribution system will power Amtrak operations between the Philadelphia Zoo and Paoli, Pennsylvania. In addition, Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) relies upon this key section of rail for regional service.

“Once this program is complete, Amtrak’s Keystone Service and Pennsylvanian trains, as well as the SEPTA Paoli Thorndale Line, will benefit from more reliable service thanks to a modern overhead catenary system (OCS) and power generation and distribution infrastructure,” said Amtrak Executive Vice President of Capital Delivery Laura Mason in a statement. “Our goal is to increase reliability and efficiency along this heavily traveled portion of the railroad.”

Burns is proud to act as the prime design firm, providing traction power, catenary and structural engineering services. Tasks involve supporting the program’s transmission installation, OCS restoration, and substation upgrade projects. Burns previously led the design — and currently provides construction oversight — for the construction of Bryn Mawr Substation.
