Mount Sinai Health System, Fire Protection Assessment and Upgrades

Burns advised Mount Sinai Health System on fire-protection system improvements at Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai Morningside and Mount Sinai West.

Burns guided three historic, top-ranked hospital campuses through upgrades necessary to comply with state and local fire-protection guidelines. By 2028, the U.S. Centers for Medicaid & Medicare (CMS) will require automatic sprinkler systems across all the country’s high-rise hospitals.

A comprehensive fire-safety master planning process involved documenting existing systems and evaluating:

Current capacity of sprinkler-system components
Emergency power distribution necessary to support hospital fire pumps
Sprinkler system resiliency
Overall compliance with state and city requirements

Following the assessment, Mount Sinai Morningside engaged Burns to provide sprinkler coverage for 22,000-square feet of mechanical rooms as well as fire pump upgrades to meet flow and pressure requirements throughout the hospital.
