Burns is applying system integration expertise to modernize Caltrain’s rider communications.
Caltrain operates rail service from the San Francisco Peninsula to southern Santa Clara County. The commuter railway’s Predictive Arrival and Departure System (PADS) provides riders with real-time train status updates — integrating on-board GPS technology, wayside train location indicators, and continuously updated station signage.
Burns is supporting an AECOM-led team with the phased replacement of Caltrain’s PADS technology. The state-of-the-art passenger information system will feature a modernized Visual Message Sign (VMS) system, enhancing security and improving rider experiences across Caltrain facilities.
Burns serves as the lead engineer for VMS integration and supports enhancement of existing PADS operations. This project builds upon rail communications systems integration services recently performed for LAX Integrated Express Solutions’ Automated People Mover and Washington Metro Area Transit Authority, among others.
