Burns Supports WMATA’s Metrorail Electrical Distribution Upgrades

August 2, 2024

Burns is supporting critical electrical infrastructure upgrades across the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Metrorail system, enhancing passenger station resilience and sustainability while improving reliability and safety.

WMATA is advancing the second phase of an expansive, 10-year State of Good Repair program. The current phase is a multimillion-dollar commitment, replacing AC power systems at nine Metrorail passenger stations.

Over the next few years, WMATA plans to complete electrical infrastructure improvements across the Metrorail system. WMATA relies on dependable AC power for operating train controls and rail communications, station pumps, elevators and escalators, fire and life safety equipment, and other critical facilities.

Supporting C3M Power Systems, Burns will serve as the engineer of record for mechanical, fire protection, and life safety designs. Station improvements include installation of new air conditioning and fire protection systems, servicing the upgraded power switchgear, transformers, switchboards, and associated control and safety equipment. Burns is also managing overall systems integration in alignment with WMATA electrical designs.
