Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program

Burns supports the PennDOT-administered program’s development and implementation, building out Pennsylvania’s electric vehicle charging network.

Pennsylvania is deploying electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across the Commonwealth.

As part of a federally funded expansion of the country’s EV charging network, the $171.5-million PennDOT National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program offers grants for the planning, design, construction, operation or maintenance of charging infrastructure.

Burns is supporting HNTB, the NEVI program’s project management consultant. Burns assists throughout the grant application process, performing feasibility studies and delivering technical support.

NEVI funding will be prioritized for charging infrastructure located along Pennsylvania’s 1,800 miles of interstate highway. Other PennDOT priorities include:

  • Ensuring sufficient charging capacity and redundancy throughout the Alternative Fuel Corridor (AFC) network
  • Providing charging at key public destinations accessible by underserved or disadvantaged populations
  • Supporting charging infrastructure for heavy- and medium-duty freight operations

Pennsylvania’s first NEVI-funded site completed construction in January 2024 at the Pilot Travel Center alongside I-81 in Luzerne County. The location is one of 56 projects selected during the program’s first round of funding.
