Burns Guides Bradley International Airport Cogeneration Plant Upgrade

Connecticut Airport Authority (CAA) and energy-services company Ameresco are undertaking an upgrade to Bradley International Airport’s cogeneration system, lowering carbon emissions and increasing system efficiency.
The Bradley Energy Center’s combined heat and power plant (CHP) can provide all the electricity needs for the medium-hub airport’s main passenger terminal. Heat recovered from the engines also supplies absorption cooling in the summer and heat throughout the winter.
Since the plant came online in 2002, CAA has relied on the 5.8-Megawatt system during multiple grid disruptions, keeping Bradley International Airport operational during extreme weather events such as Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and the Halloween nor’easter in 2011.
Burns’ expertise in airport central plants and CHP design is guiding replacement of the aging power-generation unit. Burns is supporting Ameresco with the following design and construction management services:
- Energy load evaluations to determine optimal CHP equipment
- Financial assessments to ensure cost-effective energy production
- Guidance throughout equipment procurement and installation, supporting Ameresco to maintain continuation of reliable, efficient system operations
