West Chester University, Geothermal Boiler Chiller Replacement

Burns provided engineering services for a new boiler-chiller unit at historic Recitation Hall, the oldest building on campus, improving the energy efficiency and reliability of the building’s heating and cooling system.

West Chester University features a centrally operated, 16-MW geothermal system. Ground-source heat pumps replaced steam heat and chillers previously powered by fossil fuels, resulting in a 37-percent reduction in carbon emissions.

Recitation Hall is among the campus buildings tied into the network of ground-source heat pumps. For the boiler-chiller system replacement, Burns’ services included:

  • Assessment of the building’s energy requirements.
  • Integration into the campus’ geothermal energy system.
  • Mechanical, electrical, plumbing and structural design.

The boiler-chiller replacement is scheduled to complete in 2023.
